Yaksu-ri Mural Tomb

Pyongyang, December 14 (KCNA) -- There is a mural tomb dating back to the period of Koguryo Kingdom (277 B.C. - 668 A.D.) in Yaksu-ri, Kangso District, Nampho City. It is believed to have been built in the late 4th century or early 5th century.

The tomb consists of a corridor and two chambers.

All walls and ceilings of the chambers are covered with paintings portraying the life of a couple and four guardians -- mythological turtle symbolizing the God of the North, blue dragon, white tiger and red phoenix.

The paintings represent the majesty and power of the deceased, Koguryo aristocrats. They include pictures of a magnificent procession, hunting and servants.

The mural paintings give a glimpse of the might of Koguryo Kingdom and life of its people.

The Yaksu-ri mural tomb was listed as a world cultural heritage at the 28th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO in July 2004.
