US-Russia Confrontation Deepens over MD in Europe

Pyongyang, November 30 (KCNA) -- The contradiction between Russia and the U.S. has festered over the U.S. missile defense system (MD) in Europe.

Dmitri Medvedev, in a special TV show on Nov. 23, declared that Russia will take tough measures to respond to the U.S. moves to build a missile shield.

Much upset by this, the U.S. made lame excuses that MD in Europe will never pose threat to the strategic deterrent of Russia. It also asserted that it has taken an open-hearted attitude to Russia as regards the MD project.

The U.S. and NATO have pressed for building a missile shield despite the strong protest from Russia.

Romania, Poland, Turkey and Spain have already joined the U.S.-led MD.

This stocked Russia's uneasiness and fears.

The Russian government expressed concern several times over the U.S. rapid and planned moves to build a missile shield in Europe, while demanding it give assurances of legal binding that the MD will never be used against Russia.

It also warned that if the U.S. continues to push ahead with the MD, while not taking into account the interests of Russia, the army of Russia will take military countermeasures. It may spark off a new arms race in the long run, it deplored.

In case the negotiations with the U.S. over establishment of the MD in Europe break down, Russia is set to review the possibility of deploying missile complex "Iskander" not only within its territory but in Belarus.

A Russian military expert said intercontinental ballistic missile complexes in his country will be equipped with hardware capable of intercepting any missile defense system.

The world public concerns have grown that the U.S.'s reckless MD moves are sparking off another Cold War and a new arms race on the earth.
