Kim Jong Il Visits Fish Farm under KPA Unit 580

Pyongyang, November 12 (KCNA) -- Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission, inspected the fish farm managed by Om Tok Song under the Korean People's Army Unit 580.

After being briefed on the farm before a board of diagram on its management, he toured fishponds to acquaint himself in detail with fish production.

Seeing gold carp and rainbow trout as big as forearm and other fishes bred in the farm, he learned about how much fish the farm has produced this year and what kind of unit they were supplied and what soldiers and civilians' reaction to them was.

Water is most important in guaranteeing the conditions for growth of fish, he said, inquiring about amount and temperature of fountain water flowing into the fishponds.

Asking about such matters as feed and additives for it, he said that natural fodder including pupa is desirable for fish breeding to ensure peculiar flavor of fish and hygienic safety.

He also acquainted himself in detail with cultivation of Rana omativentris launched at the fish farm lately.

Rana omativentris living at brooks in different hills and valleys of our country is beneficial animal used as health food, he noted, and gave a high appreciation of the farm which started the rearing of such frogs.

He advanced tasks for managing the fish farm.

Fountains and hot springs should be utilized to the full and all places good to breed fish found out to build more fish breeding grounds so that every place with water can be teeming with shoal of fishes, he said, adding:

Primary attention should be paid to raising coldwater fishes including rainbow trout whose economic effectiveness has been clearly proved over the past years.

It is important to intensify the scientific research and steadily enhance the role of breeders and technicians.

If officials make detailed arrangements, it is quite possible for the farm to produce much more fishes since it has solid material and technical foundations and rich experience.

He ardently called for making steady and big efforts to fish breeding which can be done easily anywhere and is of practicality and thus providing more fishes to servicepersons and people.

Accompanying him were Jang Song Thaek, alternate member of the Political Bureau of the C.C., the WPK and vice-chairman of the NDC, and Han Kwang Sang, first vice department director of the C.C., the WPK.
