DPRK Head on Measures for UNESCO Mid-term Strategy

Pyongyang, November 2 (KCNA) -- The 36th UNESCO General Conference is of importance as it reviews the second-period activities for the body's present mid-term strategy and discusses the measures for successfully concluding the final period, said the head of the DPRK delegation at its plenary meeting on Oct. 28.

The DPRK considers that the 2012-2013 program and draft budget, to be adopted at the current meeting, have been worked out in direction of successfully attaining the goals, set forth in the mid-term strategy, including realization of quality all-people education, promotion of cultural diversity and cultural dialogue and building of comprehensive knowledge-based society through telecommunications, he said, adding:

UNESCO will have to continue directing big efforts to the work for satisfactorily hitting the UN New Millennium Development Goals and other international development goals in the new period, too.

It should also concentrate efforts on such main programs as quality education and lifelong education, renewable energy, promotion of heritage and cultural expression and increased capability of telecommunications to reach the objectives of the mid-term strategy, and thus raise effectiveness of their implementation.

Priority should be steadily given to programs of assistance for developing countries. Especially, it is needed to encourage the programs related to the issues of intensifying education aid and capability, transferring latest science and technology and preserving cultural heritages for those countries.

The program and budget for new period should be implemented in direction of concentrating budget on the main goals and priority objects, if possible, while evading dispersion of the program and budget and removing complicated procedures.

Now a dynamic great drive for building a thriving country is going on in the DPRK under the wise leadership of General Secretary Kim Jong Il.

The DPRK's efforts for peaceful development will be conducive to bringing the ideal of UNESCO into reality, and this means that the DPRK is joining the international community in the efforts to reach the New Millennium Development Goals and sustained development goals of the United Nations.
