Sa Myong Dang, Righteous Monk

Pyongyang, October 28 (KCNA) -- Sa Myong Dang was a righteous monk who distinguished himself in the Imjin Patriotic War (1592-1598).

He had been interested in Confucianism and good at literature from his childhood.

When the Imjin Patriotic War broke out, he organized a volunteers' unit with monks in Mt. Kumgang and fought against the Japanese invaders under the command of great Buddhist priest Sosan in Sunan.

He entered the enemy's camp at Ulsan in Kyongsang Province three times in 1594 to turn down the invaders' arrogant demands with his well-reasoned eloquence.

He went to Japan in 1604 for peace talks and got assurance from Japan that it would never invade Korea again.

He returned home with thousands of people brought to Japan during the war.
