Rodong Sinmun Calls for Democratic Reform of UN

Pyongyang, October 24 (KCNA) -- If the United Nations is to increase its leading role in settling global problems it is necessary to carry out democratic reforms of it, observes Rodong Sinmun Monday in a bylined article dedicated to the Day of the UN.

The UN should be reformed in such a way as to fully ensure democracy and impartiality in its activities, the article says, and goes on:

The reform of the UN Security Council is an important part of the UN reform.

It is the unanimous assertion of its member nations that the UNSC should be reformed on the principle of fully ensuring the representation of non-aligned and other developing countries which account for an overwhelming majority of the UN member nations.

It is equally important to decisively increase the authority of the UN General Assembly. The authority of the UN General Assembly which is of most democratic nature in the UN remains weaker than that of the UNSC. Such deformed situation should not be allowed to go on any longer.

It is essential to urgently establish the system whereby the resolutions of the UNSC concerning peace and security including imposing sanctions and use of force should come into force only with the approval of the UN General Assembly.

20 years have passed since the DPRK joined the UN.

The DPRK remains unchanged in its assertion and stand to ensure global peace and security and soundly develop international relations by reforming the UN in a fair and democratic way and enhancing its role and functions.

The international community will show deeper trust in the UN when it solves all the global problems in a fair and reasonable way on the principle of justice and equality to meet the need of the times and desire and wishes of mankind.
