Hong Pom Do, Commander of Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army

Pyongyang, October 15 (KCNA) -- Hong Pom Do was active not only as a celebrated commander of an anti-Japanese volunteer army but also as a commander of the independence army in the early 20th century.

He organized an anti-Japanese volunteer army in 1907 when the Japanese imperialists were trying hard to invade Korea.

After the first battle on Huchi Hill in early November 1907, Hong successfully commanded his army in various battles, including those in areas of South and North Hamgyong provinces.

He devoted his whole life to liberating the country but, unfortunately, he failed to be guided properly by a leader. He died in a foreign country in October 1943.

President Kim Il Sung in his reminiscences "With the Century" said the units of the independence army won battles in Chongsan-ri and Pongo valley thanks to Hong's military stratagem.
