Tombstone of King Kwanggaetho Mausoleum

Pyongyang, October 13 (KCNA) -- The tombstone of King Kwanggaetho mausoleum was erected by his son King Jangsu in 414. Kwanggaetho was the 24th king of the Koguryo Kingdom (277 B.C.-668 A.D.). His reign period was 391-412.

The 6.34m-high tombstone was made with a large square tuff monolith. At that time it was the largest of its kind in the world.

About 1 800 letters were inscribed on the tombstone.

The epigraph tells the founding of Koguryo by Chumo (Kojumong), successive kings after him, Kwanggaetho's exploits, purpose of tombstone erection and regulations for protecting and managing the mausoleum.

It serves as a valuable material in getting a correct understanding of the history of Koguryo and the East.

The tombstone is standing on a hill in the east of Koguryo's walled capital city of Kuknae.
