WPK Emblem, Symbolic of Working Masses' Party

Pyongyang, October 8 (KCNA) -- The emblem of the Workers' Party of Korea consists of a hammer, sickle and writing brush.

President Kim Il Sung, deeply aware of the position and role of intellectuals in building a new country after Korea's liberation from the Japanese colonial rule, regarded them as one of the driving forces in revolution.

He suggested instituting the party emblem and told officials to have its design drawn.

He told them the emblem should represent the workers, peasants and working intellectuals, symbolic of a united party of the working masses.

When the design was ready, he found that a hammer stood vertically, flanked with a sickle and writing brush like fan ribs.

He said the hammer and sickle in the design were of foreign shape and that they should be drawn as Korean hammer and sickle.

He then said the three should be crossed in the middle of their handles with the brush standing vertically in the centre, little higher than others, and others slanting. His recommendation means that the workers and peasants should also acquire a high level of knowledge and culture needed for the building of an independent and sovereign state that is prosperous and civilized.

So, the emblem was redesigned as instructed by Kim Il Sung.
