Sit-in Strike Staged in S. Korea

Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- Farmers and fishermen's organizations of south Korea including the Agro-stock Emergency Committee for Measures against the Conclusion of South Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement and the Federation of Peasants Associations held a press conference in Seoul on Sept. 28 and launched an indefinite sit-in for checking the conclusion of south Korea-U.S. FTA.

It was recently disclosed that south Korean trade officials agreed with the U.S. on the possibility of negotiations for the issue of opening rice market on the sidelines of the negotiations for FTA, said speakers at the conference.

This proved that the FTA is the worst agreement deteriorating agriculture, they noted.

The trade officials approached the deal from the stand of serving the U.S. interests, they stressed, adding if the motion calling for the ratification of the proposal on FTA is railroaded through the "National Assembly", agriculture and fishery will have no future.

They would never remain a passive on-looker to the act of destroying agriculture on this land, they declared.
