Taedong Gate, Ancient Relics in Pyongyang

Pyongyang, September 30 (KCNA) -- The Taedong Gate dating back to the period of Koguryo kingdom (277 B.C.-668 A.D.) is located in the center of Pyongyang. It is typical of the ancient wall gates in Korea.

The gate was built in the middle of the sixth century as an east gate of the Walled City of Pyongyang.

It was rebuilt several times, latest in 1635.

The gate consists of an exquisite terrace made up of well-trimmed granite pieces, and an amazing gatehouse.

Seen in the gatehouse are calligraphic hanging boards reading "Taedong Gate" and "Uphoru", which means one can dip out clear water out of the Taedong River from the gate.

The gate stands in harmony with the River Taedong.
