DPRK Takes Practical Measures for Ozone Layer Protection

Pyongyang, September 16 (KCNA) -- The government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, since the Montreal Protocol on Reducing Ozone-destroying Substances" was adopted, has faithfully implemented its international commitments to the reduction of the substances.

After enacting related laws and regulations, including the law on evaluation of environmental influence, the government has taken practical measures for protecting the ozone layer.

The DPRK removed the production processes of CFC (Freon)-11, 12, 113 and CTC (carbon tetrachloride) by Juche 99 (2010). It has also eliminated HCFC-22 and 141b step by step from the beginning of this year and introduced substitute cooling technology and substances.

Meanwhile, experts met at the Grand People's Study House on Tuesday, three days before the International Day of Protection of Ozone Layer, to discuss the complete elimination of CFC-11, 12, 113 and CTC and introduction of substitute cooling technology and substances.

Through mass media, the government helps local people get a correct understanding of the importance of the effort for protecting the ozone layer.

Secretary of the National Ozone Office Jang Chol Gun told KCNA that the DPRK government will strictly observe the timetable of the Montreal Protocol on eliminating the ozone-destroying substances, thus fulfilling its commitments to the international community.
