Mt. Kumgang Abundant in Animals, Plants

Pyongyang, September 6 (KCNA) -- Mt. Kumgang in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is famous for varieties of plants and animals.

The offshore mountain, with streams and a lake, is a good habitat of animals, birds and fishes.

Vertebrates alone account for 390 species. They include musk, antelope, big bear, deer and white weasel.

The mountain shelters swifts, calves, cuckoos, kingfishers and other migratory birds, as well as such all-season birds as eagle owls and pheasants.

Streams of Inner Kumgang and Outer Kumgang are inhabited by carps, goldfishes, eels, catfishes, trouts, salmons and daces.

The mountain also has many species of reptiles, amphibians and insects.

Animals' cries and birds' twitters add to the scenic beauty of the mountain.

Mt. Kumgang, standing in the middle part in view of plant distribution, has favorable topographical and climate conditions for many species of plants ranging from those of the south temperate zone to those of the subarctic zone.

About 2 260 species of plants are growing in the mountain.

Of them some 1 000 species are flowering plants and over 100 species are indigenous plants.

Pentactina rupicola, one and only species in the world, is growing on cliffs 400-800 meters high above the sea level.

The mountain is thickly wooded with shrubs, herbaceous plants, pine trees and spruces.

Magnolia, Korea's national flower, is largely distributed in Outer Kumgang.
