S. Korean Authorities Suppress Action against Naval Base Construction

Pyongyang, September 3 (KCNA) -- The south Korean authorities are now resorting to a wholesale crackdown on the action of inhabitants and peace activists against the naval base construction on Jeju Island.

Sogwipho Police Station Thursday arrested three members of a citizens' organization on charge of disturbing its performance of duty before conducting an investigation.

Next day the authorities resumed the construction from its dawn and, at the same time, hurled more than 1 000 riot forces including police force from the inland into Kangjong Village, creating a terror-ridden atmosphere.

The inhabitants and peace activists waged a stubborn sit-in strike in protest against the suppression but the heavily armed policemen brutally cracked down on them.

The military authorities kicked up a racket, dismantling the tents of peace activists.

The police walked off at least 30 persons including the executive chairman of the All-Islanders Measure Committee for Checking the Construction of the Jeju Military Base, inhabitants of the village and religionists.

The sit-in strikers bitterly denounced the police for running wild with suppression while paying lip-service to "peaceful solution."
