Authorities' Brutal Human Rights Abuses under Fire in S. Korea

Pyongyang, September 2 (KCNA) -- The People for Achieving Peace and Reunification in south Korea held the 115th meeting for peace and disarmament outside the building of the Ministry of Defense on August 30 at which it denounced the authorities' brutal abuses of the human rights of participants in the action against the Jeju naval base construction.

A written protest was read out at the meeting.

It accused the National Police Agency of hurling forces into Jeju Island allegedly to cope with the situation in Kangjong village and the Prosecution Office of declaring that it would deal with inhabitants opposed to the project, peace activists and those involved in illegal group actions by on-the-spot arrest, custody and investigation.

The Jeju District Court decided to impose a fine upon those opposed to the project, it said, adding:

This clearly indicates the "government's" attempt to carry out the project by violence, defying people's protest.

It demanded the "government" stop at once violent suppression and the naval base construction.
