S. Korean Authorities' Wholesale Crackdown upon Protesters under Fire

Pyongyang, August 31 (KCNA) -- The south Korean Measure Council for Checking the Construction of Jeju Naval Base released a statement titled "We denounce the military, prosecution, police and conservative press for defying public calling for dialogue and creating a terror-ridden atmosphere under the pretext of security" on August 27.

The statement accused the prosecution authorities of applying on August 24 for warrants of arrest for the participants in the action against the naval base construction including the chief of the Kangjong Village, Jeju Island for putting them in custody.

It recalled that when Jeju islanders lodged a strong protest against the project, the police walked them off as if they had been waiting for their action and the prosecution clarified its stand to strongly react against the protest while conservative media are busy branding those forces opposed to the construction project as "pro-north forces".

This indicates that the authorities are set to stem the trend of people's protest only by using government power, it said.

The statement demanded the "government" release all the arrested people, stop the project and make an apology for the recent incident.

Representatives of opposition parties on Jeju Island held a press conference at the village on August 29 at which they chided the authorities' suppression.
