Unjust Construction of Jeju Naval Base under Fire

Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- The Priests' Group for Justice and Peace of the Episcopal Church of south Korea and two other religious organizations issued a joint statement, according to the south Korean Internet paper Jaju Minbo on August 23.

The statement laid bare the injustice of the construction of the Jeju naval base, noting it is aimed at depriving inhabitants there of their cradle, destroying ecological environment and threatening peace.

The "government" and the military authorities are pushing forward the construction of the base despite the opposition of different circles to meet their interests, the statement noted, adding that they seek to help the U.S. government achieve its purpose of escalating the military tension on the Korean Peninsula and the U.S. munitions monopolies such as the Lockheed Martin Company realize their desire to sell interceptor missiles, radar system, etc. to be loaded on warships to anchor at the Jeju naval base.

It is as clear as noonday that if the naval base is built on Jeju Island, it will turn into a U.S. military base, the statement said, stressing: The plan for building the base should be nullified.
