Tangun's Mausoleum

Pyongyang, August 22 (KCNA) -- King Tangun's mausoleum is situated on the ridge of Mt. Taebak in Munhung-ri, Kangdong County, Pyongyang.

Tangun is the founder of Ancient Korea, the first state in the East that existed from the early 30th century B.C. to 108 B.C., covering vast areas of Northeast Asia centering on Pyongyang.

The pyramid-shape stone mausoleum is a structure of regular square, 50 meters wide in one side at the bottom and 22 meters high. It covers 45 hectares.

The 9-stair structure is made up of 1 994 trimmed granite pieces and has two stone gates, each weighing 1.2 tonnes.

Two big glass tubes containing the remains of Tangun and his wife are on a large stone stand in the chamber. Tangun's portrait is hanging on a wall of the chamber.

The mausoleum is surrounded by sculptures of Korean tigers, pipha-shape daggers and Tangun's sons and vassals.

The original tomb of Tangun was excavated and confirmed in Juche 82 (1993) under the guidance of President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il.

The excavation proved in a scientific way that Tangun was not a myth but a real human being who was born 5011 (±267) years ago from the year of excavation and that he was the ancestral father of the Korean nation.
