Human Rights Violated in S. Korean Army

Pyongyang, August 20 (KCNA) -- The south Korean newspaper Hangyore recently carried an article exposing human rights abuses in the south Korean army.

The article said:

Outrages on human rights in the army, including the Marine Corps, have been revealed one after another. All of those who died or met mishaps in the case of the Second Division of the Marine Corps are victims of the evil barracks culture.

What a private second class, surnamed Jong, said during a military inquiry is shocking. He was examined for a shooting incident together with a private first class, surnamed Kim.

According to his statement, a senior soldier accused him of believing in Christianity and set fire to a bible under his eyes. He suffered all manners of outrages.

The fact offers a glimpse of human rights abuses prevalent in the whole army. The wrong soldier spirit mainly causes such situation. The distorted view -- soldiers should stand beating -- persists in the army.

The outdated view was a serious problem in the past and it is a difficult thing for soldiers of the new generation to accept.

It has been confirmed that commanding officers are taking the lead in covering up the serious situation. The military authorities deny human rights organizations to true stories in an apparent bid to hide the structural problems of the barracks life and commanding officers' defects.
