Beijing, August 17 (KCNA) -- The Chinese Defense Daily Tuesday carried an article titled "Untimely Military Exercise".

The United States and south Korea term their joint military exercise "Ulji Freedom Guardian" an annual event, but the DPRK cannot but consider it a provocation, with the drill apparently aimed at the country and its offensive nature getting pronounced, said the article.

The situation of the Korean peninsula is inclining towards relaxation thanks to joint efforts of parties concerned and DPRK-U.S. talks were held recently, the article noted, adding:

But the exercise chills the atmosphere of relaxation, making it difficult to resume the six-party talks and solve the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula in a peaceful way.

With the end of the cold war, the world's bipolar structure collapsed, but the cold war persists in the Korean peninsula.

Minor conflicts have occurred one after another in the peninsula since 2002. With the security system remaining very frail, even a trifle case in the region may lead to another conflict.

What is most crucial is the U.S. attitude. If the United States signs a peace agreement with the DPRK, breaking with the cold-war thinking pattern, a gleam of peace will come to the Korean peninsula.
