S. Korean Opposition Leader Assaulted

Pyongyang, August 18 (KCNA) -- A south Korean opposition leader was assaulted by a conservative on Monday during a meeting for halving tuition fees, said the south Korean newspaper Hangyore.

When Jong Tong Yong, executive chairman of the Democratic Party, was in the meeting held in Chonggye Plaza in Seoul, a man affiliated with a conservative organization, flung himself on Jong and shook him by the hair, calling him a "red" and "pro-northern".

Earlier on August 1, conservative ruffians hurled water bottles to Jong when he was inspiring labor activities with a hunger strike for a solution to the Hanjin Heavy Industry's serious situation.

Next day the ruffians blocked Paek Ki Wan, director of the Unification Study Center, in his way to the hunger-strike site and threatened his life.

A spokesperson for the Democratic Party released a commentary urging the "government" to apologize for the outrages and take measures to prevent recurrence of violence.
