Peace on Korean Peninsula and Independent Reunification Called for in S. Korea

Pyongyang, August 15 (KCNA) -- Members of civic and public organizations and students in Seoul held a rally on August 11 to achieve the peace on the Korean Peninsula and its independent reunification.

Speakers at the rally said that visits, contacts and cooperation between the south and the north were brisk after the adoption of the June 15 joint declaration and the October 4 declaration. But the inter-Korean relations were deteriorated and the danger of war increased on the peninsula after the emergency of the present regime, they added.

They underlined the need to realize peace and stability in the peninsula through dialogue, not through confrontation, and achieve the independent reunification by the concerted efforts of the Korean nation.

They demanded the "government" stop at once all the war moves including the construction of the Jeju naval base.

They urged the authorities to immediately opt for probing the truth about the U.S. forces' crimes related to defoliant burial, getting the U.S. withdrawn from south Korea and settling the registration fee issue.

People from all walks of life will dynamically advance along the road of reunification, holding high the banner of inter-Korean joint declarations, they declared.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Democratic Labor Party, the New Progressive Party and the Party for People's Participation in the Seoul area urged the "government" to roll back the confrontation policy and come out for dialogue with the north.
