Toxic Substances Detected in Former U.S. Military Base in S. Korea

Pyongyang, August 8 (KCNA) -- Toxic substances fatally harmful to human beings were detected in the former U.S. military base in Puphyong District, Inchon City, according to south Korean KBS on August 5.

It was freshly confirmed that toxic substances including phenol, carcinogenic substance, over 20 times the tolerance limit were detected in the place where a U.S. forces' military transport corps was stationed till late in the 1970s, according to the results of soil survey conducted by an institute at the request of the Puphyong District side some days ago. Such heavy metals as lead and zinc were also detected there.

Saying that dioxin, major toxic substance in defoliant, was not surveyed this time, inhabitants in Inchon called for an additional survey.
