Fantastic Background Stand of "Arirang"
Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- Preparations have been finished to give the grand gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang" at May Day Stadium in Pyongyang.

What is most conspicuous in the extravaganza is the background stand.

Through ever-changing pictures of the beautiful landscape of the country and the history of its political, military, economic, cultural and social development, the background stand shows the heroic spirit and close unity of the Korean people.

It, displayed by tens of thousands of schoolchildren, gives explanations of the scenes with letters and pictures.

It is also used as screen for film scenes suitable for the performance.

Many foreigners who enjoyed the annual event before admired kaleidoscopic background arts. The display was so disciplined that some of them thought it was controlled by computer and others went to the stand to confirm schoolchildren's display at first hand after the performance.

Ri Jong A, a 16-year-old girl studying at Pyongyang Changgwang Secondary School, told KCNA:

I am pleased to join in the background stand admired by world people. I will make a good job in this year's performance.

Rim Chol Bom, a 16-year-old secondary school student in Pyongyang, said:

The background stand has been supplemented with new letters and pictures. So, I used to make some mistakes in practice before. But I am good now.

Song Song Chan, an official in charge of the background stand, said:

About 20 percent of the background arts have been renewed for this year's performance. I am sure the ever-changing background display, the first of its kind in the world, will enjoy a big applause from spectators.

The performance will start on August 1.
