Korean Citizens' Legal Rights to Vote
Pyongyang, July 23 (KCNA) -- An election for local people's assemblies will be held in the DPRK on Sunday.

The DPRK Socialist Constitution stipulates in Article 66 that all the citizens who have reached the age of 17 have rights to elect and be elected, irrespective of sex, race, occupation, length of residence, property status, education, party affiliation, political views and religion.

The stipulation makes it possible to base the state power on the working masses and encourage them to elect deputies truly representing their will.

Servicepersons, overseas citizens and foreigners with Korean citizenship also have suffrage.

All the citizens with suffrage enjoy a fully democratic election system, not subject to restriction.

The government forms election committees, constituencies and sub-constituencies in a rational way, make out and display lists of voters, providing all possible conditions for all the eligible voters to cast ballots according to their will.

The first democratic election was held in Korea on November 3, Juche 35 (1946), after the liberation of the country on August 15, 1945. Since then, elections for people's assemblies at all levels have been held in the country on a regular basis.

Through the elections, people exercise their legal rights and elect those faithful to the country and the people as deputies for power bodies.
