S. Korean Authorities' Suppression of Protestors under Fire
Pyongyang, July 20 (KCNA) -- Civic and public organizations of south Korea including the Pan-Islanders Measure Committee for Checking the Construction of Jeju Military Base, the Association of Kangjong Villagers and the People for Achieving Peace and Reunification held a press conference on Jeju Island on July 18 to protest the "government" authorities' crackdown on the actions against the military base construction.

Speakers at the conference accused the authorities of walking off and cracking down on activists including the chairman of the Inhabitants Measure Committee for Opposing the Construction of Jeju Naval Base for the mere reason that they offered resistance against the project.

The authorities should set free the unreasonably arrested people immediately and stop at once the project, they urged, warning:

If the authorities do not meet the demand, all the forces opposed to the construction of the naval base would declare a state of emergency and turn out in actions.

They demanded that the authorities withdraw all the repressive steps such as suing them for damage, a despicable use of money for crackdown.
