S. Korean Police and Military Authorities Hit for Suppression of Protestors
Pyongyang, July 19 (KCNA) -- The south Korean Measure Council for Checking the Construction of Jeju Naval Base held an emergency press conference outside the "government general building" on July 15 to denounce the police crackdown upon the participants in the actions against the construction of the base for aggression.

Speakers at the conference recalled that at dawn that day the police suddenly walked off the chief of Kangjong Village on Jeju Island and two others, including the chairman of the Inhabitants Measure Committee Opposing the Construction of Jeju Naval Base, protesting the arrest.

This means a start of the wholesale repression offensive against the actions of people from all walks of life against the construction of the naval base, they said. They warned they would turn out in a dynamic protest campaign, if the authorities put in custody those arrested.

The Jeju Island Committee of the Democratic Labor Party and other opposition parties in commentaries and statements denounced the police for its suppression and demanded it set free those arrested immediately.

The Pan-Islanders Measure Committee for Checking Jeju Military Base in a statement on July 14 condemned the military authorities for their suppression.

The Navy side recently let the construction enterprises and lawyers close to it charge Jeju island protestors against the construction of the base with disturbing it in the performance of its duty and even sued them for damage, the statement said, demanding its withdrawal.
