US Forces Accused of Having Concealed Environmental Pollution in S. Korea
Pyongyang, June 30 (KCNA) -- The People's Measure Council on Defoliant Case in south Korea held a press conference outside the U.S. military base in Ryongsan, Seoul, on June 27 denouncing the U.S. forces in south Korea for having concealed environmental pollution inside the Waegwan U.S. military base.

Speakers at the conference noted that reports on a series of surveys made by the U.S. forces present in south Korea into the contaminated soil and underground water in their base in Waegwan since 1992 have been disclosed recently.

According to the reports, it was made known during the surveys that dioxin was detected and mercury was 800 times that of the legal limit, various kinds of carcinogen 1,000 times, 2,400 times and 4,000 times at the maximum that of the allowed level, they noted.

These unimaginable levels prove that the contamination level was getting serious from long ago due to the storage, leakage and burial of various kinds of toxic materials inside the base, they held.

They declared that they would form an investigation team with experts to directly survey environmental pollution and probe the truth about it.

They urged the U.S. forces to open to public all the surveyed information about environmental pollution inside their base in Waegwan and revise the south Korea-U.S. "Status of Forces Agreement" so that the occurrence of environmental pollution might be informed immediately in the future.
