Over the past three decades, he has trained a number of female boxers.

Yun Kum Ju, who won gold medals at the Asian and world women's boxing championships held in 2010, and Kim Hye Song and Pak Kyong Ok, who took the titles at the 2011 Asia Cup Women's Boxing Tournament, were all trained by him.

His daughter Ri Jong Hyang finished first twice at the world championships and thrice at the Asian championships and his nephew Ri Suk Yong won gold medals at the 3rd and 4th Asian women's boxing championships.

Ri Kwi Jung, born in Japan, came back to his homeland, the DPRK, and studied at a university before becoming a boxing coach in his twenties.
