Biosphere Sanctuary of Mt. Paektu
Pyongyang, June 8 (KCNA) -- The biosphere sanctuary of Mt. Paektu covers a vast space extending from the mountain to an area southeast of it.

Mt. Paektu rises 2,750 meters above the sea level. It is a famous mountain from the ecological, historical and cultural point of view.

The mountain, formed by a volcanic action, has a peculiar ecosystem.

Korean tiger, deer, musk and other animals live in the mountain. Siberian larch, white birch and other trees, wild vegetables, medicinal herbs, aromatic plants and flowering plants are growing there.

In particular, thirteen percent of the tundra plants grow in the mountain to attract public interest.

Char lives in Lake Chon on the mountain.

Mt. Paektu and its surrounding area were registered as an international biosphere sanctuary in April Juche 78 (1989) as they are of great significance in protecting biodiversity.
