Japan's Designation of East Sea of Korea as "Japan Sea" Slammed
Pyongyang, April 22 (KCNA) -- A symposium of officials in the field of social sciences took place here to condemn the Japanese reactionaries for their designation of the East Sea of Korea as the "Japan Sea".

Present there were Thae Hyong Chol, president of the Academy of Social Sciences, officials concerned and officials, teachers and researchers in the fields of science and education.

Speakers explained and proved in detail the validity of the name of the East Sea of Korea and the unreasonable designation of it as the "Japan Sea" through historic documents and map data.

They went on: Our ancestors made massive inroads into the Japanese archipelago, exploring the East Sea of Korea from the ancient times. They set up the Usan State by bringing Ulrung Island and Tok Islets under their control. In this course they acquired profound knowledge and understanding of the East Sea and named the sea off Korea "East Sea of Korea" before any others. This name had been used till the end of the Ri dynasty.

The name "Japan" appeared in the world from the latter half of the 7th century and the name of the country called "Korea" has a five thousand years-long history. In view of this fact it is as clear as noonday historically and from its origin that the above-said controversial sea has been called the East Sea of Korea.

After fabricating the "Ulsa Five-point Treaty" in 1905, the Japanese imperialists began to designate "Sea of Korea" as "Japan Sea" in the maps of Japan. They became all the pronounced in their moves to name "Japan Sea" after occupying Korea.

When Korea was barred from sending its delegate to the conference of the International Hydrographic Organization held in 1929, the Japanese imperialists registered the East Sea of Korea as "Japan Sea" in a cunning way.

The Japanese reactionaries have recently resorted to foolish moves to make "Japan Sea" recognized and preserved by the international community in a bid to "protect" it.

They are making desperate efforts to preserve their unilateral designation of "Japan Sea" but their ambition will be decisively shattered and the fair and aboveboard international standardization of geographical name of the East Sea of Korea will be certainly realized for its truth and justice.
