Progress in Railway Construction in China
Beijing, March 23 (KCNA) -- China has made progress in the railway construction.

Its people rebuilt railways which were destroyed in the 1950s and the 1960s and stepped up the project of laying new railway sections. This provided a basic foundation for its economic development

In the 1970s and the 1980s they built Chengdu-Kunming railways and several other sections, markedly improving the traffic conditions in the border districts and the inland areas.

Since the 1990s the country pushed forward the projects of connecting railways across the country and converting them into electric tractions. It also directed much effort to building railways in the western areas from 2000 to 2009.

By 2006 the railway networks made their appearance in almost all areas including those of minority peoples.

In recent five years 16,000 km-long railways have been built in the country.

In particular, rapid transit railways have been constructed one after another.

The construction of new railways promotes China's rapid economic growth, giving the country facelifts.
