DPRK Directs Much Effort to Management of Water Resources
Pyongyang, March 22 (KCNA) -- The DPRK government has paid deep attention to making an effective use of water resources.

Based on the laws on water resources and national land planning, it has protected and developed water resources, steadily increasing investment in this field.

Reservoirs and hydraulic power stations have been built in areas with a large amount of precipitation and upper streams abundant in water resources to operate a rational water control system throughout the country.

The Kaechon-Lake Thaesong Waterway, Paekma-Cholsan Waterway and other gravity-fed waterways bring water to agricultural fields.

Water and flood forecasting systems are available for all streams and reservoirs and an early warning system is working in the country to prevent disasters.

In spring and autumn, the government concentrates on land management, including tree planting and river improvement. It has also put the water resources management on an IT basis.

A program for the environment protection of the River Taedong, one of the country's major streams, has already been worked out.

Information activities for protection and management of the water resources have also been conducted in a diverse way.

Meanwhile, the government has cooperated with such international organization as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for the management of water resources.
