Ancestral Mountain of Korea
Pyongyang, March 18 (KCNA) -- Mt. Paektu is the ancestral mountain of Korea.

All the mountain ranges stretch from Mt. Paektu.

The 2 750-meter-high mountain, the highest in the country, came into being through volcanic eruptions and evolution process.

The mountain has no similar in the country in view of geological features, natural environment, plants, animals and stream source.

The mountain appeared when torrents of lava poured forth a million years ago. Later, the volcano burst into eruption again, vomiting basalt to make a basaltic plateau called the Paektu lava plateau.

It, which had long been glaciated, spouted pumice stones several times.

Remarkable in the mountain scenery is the Lake Chon.

The water of the large lake is very clean.

The mountain consists of 216 peaks, including Janggun and Hyangdo Peaks.

The mountain is associated with the history of the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle guided by President Kim Il Sung in the first half of the 20th century. It also has leader Kim Jong Il's birthplace.
