Korean Silk
Pyongyang, March 17 (KCNA) -- The Pyongyang Silk Shop draws many customers seeking silk goods like Korean chima (skirt) and jogori (coat).

The silk fabrics are woven at silk mills in Pakchon and Nyongbyon.

The Korean people have used silk from the end of the primitive ages along with hemp and ramie cloth.

Among the relics dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages discovered in Jithap-ri, Pongsan County, North Hwanghae Province, and other areas of the country there are some silkworm-patterned earthenware, an evidence that silk was made at that time.

In the years of Koryo (early 10th century-late 14th century) silk was woven by an advanced technology and its kind was also diverse, enjoying popularity in local and foreign markets.

In the period of the Ri Dynasty (1392-1910) mulberry trees were planted and silk producers built throughout the country.

The silk, with elegant and beautiful colors and a smooth touch, is divided into three kinds -- saengbidan, sukbidan and chambidan.

Saengbidan is suitable for summer clothes, sukbidan for spring and autumn costumes and chambidan for winter dresses.
