Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu
Pyongyang, March 17 (KCNA) -- Mt. Paektu in the northern part of Korea, one of the most celebrated mountains in the country, has a lake on its top.

Lake Chon came into being by a volcano eruption.

Korean ancestors called the lake "Taeji", "Chonsangsu", "Ryongdam" and "Ryonggungdam", symbolizing a large pond and fairyland.

The bottom of the lake is similar to a dish.

Its water is very clear and clean.

Atmospheric precipitation is filtered and purified by the ridge, crater walls, lithology, soil and plants.

A cableway and stone stairs help tourists go down and take water of the lake.

Its winter scenery is a spectacular sight which can be seen only on Mt. Paektu.

The lake begins to freeze in late September and gets completely frozen in early December.

During the period, one can see the water deeper than in summer.

Ice melts away from mid-May to mid-June.
