DPRK Establishes Technology of Cultivating Vegetables of New Species
Pyongyang, March 14 (KCNA) -- The Pyongyang Vegetable Science Institute, a comprehensive center for vegetable science research and production, established a system for cultivating vegetables of new species based on the cutting-edge science and technology.

The predecessor of the institute is the Pyongyang Vegetable Experiment Station founded in Juche 48 (1959). The institute has since developed into a center for the research into vegetable science and its production.

There sprang up in Pyongyang in the new century a large area of modern greenhouses, the first of its kind in the DPRK.

There are water culture hothouses built by its own efforts and indigenous technology to suit the actual conditions of the country.

The manufacture and management of the nutritious liquid, the control of hothouse environment and watering of crops and application of fertilizers, etc. are computerized to boost the efficiency in the research into the vegetable growing in hothouses and its production.

The issues of nutritious liquid and substrate suited to the actual conditions of the area have been solved to fully ensure the normal operation of the water culture hothouses.

Solar-heated vinyl sheet-roofed hothouses have been successfully built to keep the temperature there higher than that in the existing hothouses.

The institute successfully introduces scientific and technological achievements into production.

High-yielding species of vegetables strong enough to stand diseases have been cultivated. Among the newly bred dozens of species of fruit and leaf vegetables with high productivity and nutrition include eggplant, hot pepper and cabbage.

The institute also cultivated vegetables of various species suited to various hothouses.

Signal progress has been made in the research into environmentally friendly vegetables, too.

Researches have been conducted to cultivate vegetables of new species to lower the content of harmful substance in vegetables and select right soil for them, etc. to lay a solid scientific and technological foundation to produce environmentally friendly vegetables in the country.

Innovations have been effected in the researches into the technology of cultivating vegetables, too.

They include the selection of species of vegetables and sowing machines suited to the phase-to-phase cultivation of cabbage at vinyl sheet-roofed hothouses in winter and the solution of the issue of how many vegetable plants should be planted per phyong.

The institute has developed the technology of cultivating radish in all seasons and that of cultivating quality vegetables and newly bred species of vegetables has been successfully introduced into production.
