Biofuels Cause Food Price Rise
Pyongyang, February 24 (KCNA) -- The U.S. has long pursued a substitute fuel plan for producing biofuel from corn.

Soon after the publication of this plan, the corn price has doubled in several countries, gravely affecting those living on corn.

The world food prices showed 140 percent sharp increase in the period from 2002 to February 2008, over 75 percent of which is attributable to the massive production of biofuels by the U.S. and other Western countries, a report of the World Bank said.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization warned that the increased biofuel production is reducing food supply, causing sharp price rise.

The January 31st issue of Cuban newspaper Granma said that in 2009 the U.S. used 119 million tons of corn for the production of ethanol, adding that 350 million people can be fed for one year with that amount.

The U.S. plan for production of biofuel from corn envisages the yearly production of 132 million liters of biofuel by 2017 for which 320 million tons of corn are needed.

People express concern that the number of people miring in abject poverty will reach 1.2 billion worldwide by 2025 unless the plan is stopped.

The U.S. biofuel plan is blamed worldwide for its criminal nature and danger.
