Multi-Functional Solar Greenhouses Built in Various Places
Pyongyang, February 24 (KCNA) -- The Energy Center of the State Committee for Science and Technology in the DPRK developed a multi-functional solar greenhouse. It has been successfully introduced to various units.

The greenhouse is operating for stock-breeding, fish breeding, cultivating vegetables and producing methane gas simultaneously by use of solar heat.

Laid out in the greenhouse are a vegetable field, sheds for domestic animals, a fishpond and methane gas tank, etc.

The side of the greenhouse is built in semi-arch style to admit sunlight at maximum.

The introduction of convection prevention and heat insulation methods made it possible to sharply decrease the loss in heat through the wall.

The construction of a fishpond along the side of the wall admitting sunlight in a waterway style helps increase the heat accumulating capacity, while cutting down the loss in heat from the ground by half.

In case temperature outside the greenhouse goes down as low as 20 degrees centigrade below zero, temperature inside it stands at more than 10 degrees centigrade, making it possible to cultivate vegetables even in winter.

In the greenhouse methane gas is produced by use of agricultural by-products and excrement of domestic animals and secretion from gas fermentation is used as feed for domestic animals and fishes and the leftover of the fermentation as good quality organic fertilizer.

Jong Yong Suk, 44, chairwoman of the management board of the Rihyon Co-op Farm for Vegetable Cultivation in Sadong District, Pyongyang, said, referring to the economic efficiency of the greenhouse:

The multi-functional solar greenhouse never uses fuel and is environmentally friendly. It is profitable as it has a stock-breeding and agricultural production cycle.

It is capable of boosting the vegetable production 1.5 times and livestock products 2 times, while cutting down manpower and materials.
