No Raison d'etre for US Military Bases
Pyongyang, February 21 (KCNA) -- Former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on Feb. 12 revealed the agreement reached at secret talks between Japan and the United States during his term of office over the relocation of the U.S. Futenma military base.

Speaking to Kyodo News, he said that the relocation outside Okinawa, one of his campaign pledges, ended with the transfer within the prefecture under the pretext of U.S. Marines' deterrence.

His remark reverses the allegation of the U.S. and Japanese authorities that U.S. forces are kept in Japan to deter others' threat.

Meanwhile, two U.S. congressmen, in interviews with Kyodo News on Feb. 15, called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Japan.

Republican Ron Paul said "deterrence" is nothing but an excuse to maintain military approach to northeast Asia.

Democrat Dennis Kucinich described the U.S. military presence in Japan as a "relic of the past".

The United States should rid itself of its military-first policy, he urged.

Like this, the injustice of the U.S. military presence in Japan and other northeast Asian regions is admitted by even high-ranking Japanese and U.S. politicians.

The United States should slough off its thinking pattern of the cold war style and take a substantial measure to withdraw its troops, the root cause of instability, from northeast Asia, including the Korean Peninsula and Japan.
