Exploration of Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu Brisk
Pyongyang, February 19 (KCNA) -- A comprehensive exploration of Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu of the DPRK is now making brisk headway.

The members of the Group for the Comprehensive Exploration of the Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu are intensifying the observation and survey of the lake despite the extremely unfavorable natural environment in order to clarify the mystery of the lake which attracts people's attention for its magnificent, graceful and fascinating scenery.

According to the observation data available, diastrophism in the area of the lake and the state of ice there at present remain just the same as those last year and animals' activities are normal.

The hot spring of Mt. Paektu preserves the same property in midwinter, having a striking contrast to the thick ice covered with snow.

The minimum temperature at present was observed 1°C lower than last year, the wind speed on Janggun Peak registered 40m/s and thickness of the ice was over 1 meter. It is getting thicker.

There were distinct footprints of animals living on the shore of the lake including squirrel and striped squirrel and squeaking of piping hare, a rare animal there, is heard frequently.

Rhododendron looks green despite bitter cold in Mt. Paektu.

It is fantastic to see the sunrise on Mt. Paektu, snow storms that fill its valleys in a minute, snow-covered vast lake, mountains covered with ice of various shapes and frostworks near the hot spring, etc.
