Koreans in Japan Mark Birthday of Kim Jong Il
Pyongyang, February 17 (KCNA) -- A meeting of Korean residents in Japan took place at the Korean Hall of Culture in Tokyo on Feb. 15 to celebrate the birthday of General Secretary Kim Jong Il.

Present were Ho Jong Man, chief vice-chairman of the Central Standing Committee of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon), and its vice-chairmen, deputies to the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, advisors of the Chongryon Central Standing Committee, a permanent advisor to the Research Institute on History of Korean Residents in Japan, directors of the Chongryon Central Standing Committee and senior officials of leading organizations and businesses of Chongryon and others.

Ho Jong Man in his report noted that Kim Jong Il showed great loving care and trust for the officials of Chongryon and other Koreans in Japan to defend and develop the Chongryon, a precious patriotic legacy of President Kim Il Sung, and display its honor of being the model of the world overseas compatriots' movement.

He stressed the need for Chongryon to launch a 90-day campaign for glorifying this year as a year of essential and decisive turn in ushering in the fresh heyday of the movement of Koreans in Japan all at once, conduct the movement for inviting Koreans to come to fold of Chongryon in real earnest and direct greater efforts to the national education, the lifeline of the movement of the Koreans in Japan.

Chongryon will conduct brisk external activities to make Japan settle its past in the spirit of the DPRK-Japan Pyongyang Declaration and take sincere stand for the normalization of the DPRK-Japan relations, he said, adding: It will wage the vigorous reunification movement under the banner of "By our nation itself" in hearty response to the joint statement of the DPRK government, political parties and organizations.

A congratulatory message of the Chongryon Central Standing Committee to Kim Jong Il was adopted at the meeting.
