Folk Games for January 15th of Lunar Calendar
Pyongyang, February 16 (KCNA) -- The Koreans have celebrated the January 15th of the lunar calendar as a folk holiday since olden times. This holiday is marked on the occasion of the appearance of a full moon.

They have played different folk games on the day.

One of them is setting up poles with grain stalks with the advent of the January fourteenth of the lunar calendar. This game was played mainly by children.

They set up poles holding rice, kaoliang, foxtail, millet and other grain stalks before singing songs and dancing around them.

This custom reflects the hope of peasants to see the same bumper harvest in the new year, too, as those big ears of rice and other grains hanging from the poles.

On the day of the full moon people enjoyed a game with torches, greeting the moon.

Koreans used to climb mountains and hills around their villages to enjoy the full moon on the evening of the 15th and go out to fields with torches to burn weeds and insects.

Children enjoyed kite-flying, toy pinwheel, tug of war and other folk games on this holiday.
