Chinese Folktale Adapted as Opera in Korea
Pyongyang, February 7 (KCNA) -- The Chinese folktale "A Dream of Red Mansions" written hundreds of years ago is considered to be one of the works representing 5,000 years of the Chinese nation's traditional culture.

When the opera based on the folktale was being recreated in Korea, Chinese people wondered whether foreigners could adapt the wide-ranging and profound story as an opera.

But the Phibada Opera Troupe of Korea successfully recreated the opera and made a performance tour of seven Chinese cities, including Beijing, from May 2010, enjoying a great popularity among Chinese people.

From July 5, it performed the opera again in Beijing.

The audience admired the performers for their artistic ability, beautiful dances and songs, lifelike acting and wonderful backgrounds.

It was in the 1960s that the opera "A Dream of Red Mansions" was created in Korea for the first time on the initiative of President Kim Il Sung.

General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave an instruction to recreate the opera to celebrate the year of DPRK-China friendship, 2010, and guided it on the spot more than once.

After enjoying the performance, Chinese people said the Korean opera gave a vivid representation of the story and its characters.
