400-Year-Old Medical Book
Pyongyang, December 18 (KCNA) -- 400 years has elapsed since Tonguibogam (encyclopedia of traditional medicines of Korea) was compiled.

The 25-volume book is one of Korea's three famous old medical books, along with Hyangyakjipsongbang (85 volumes published in 1433) and Uibangryuchwi (365 volumes compiled in 1445).

It was compiled by Ho Jun (1546-1615), a medical man famous in the country at that time, in 1610 on the basis of his longtime clinical experience and in reference to hundreds of medical books, amassing the traditional medical knowledge gained until the early 17th century.

It, which consists of a catalogue (2 volumes), internal medicine (4 volumes), external medicine (4 volumes), diseases (11 volumes), decoction (3 volumes) and acupuncture and moxibustion (1 volume), gives details of the structure and physiology of human body and examination, prevention and treatment methods of various diseases, as well as folk remedies.

The book, reprinted several times including in 1814 and 1874 in the country, was also printed in China and Japan.

The book was translated into modern Korean language in Juche 51 (1962) and again in 1982, divided into five collections with annotation.
