Memorial Services for Victims of Kanto Earthquake Held
Pyongyang, September 5 (KCNA) -- A memorial service for Koreans killed during the great Kanto earthquake was held in front of the monument to them in Tokyo on September 1 in connection with the lapse of 87 years since the massacre of Koreans committed by the Japanese imperialists after the disaster.

Present there were Pak Ku Ho, vice-chairman of the Central Standing Committee of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) who doubles as chairman of the Committee for Rights and Welfare, Hwang Myong, chairman of the Tokyo Metropolitan Headquarters of Chongryon, and other officials and Koreans in Japan.

The participants paid silent tribute to the dead.

Hwang Myong recalled in a memorial address at the meeting that when the discontent with the government reached an extreme phase among the people who had been thrown into horror and uneasiness by the great earthquake that hit Kanto area on September 1, 1923, the Japanese authorities hatched a terrible plot to direct the spearhead of their attack to the Koreans in Japan.

The Japanese authorities' unprecedented bestial atrocities committed against Koreans in Japan were beyond human imagination in their brutal nature, he noted, and continued:

87 years have passed since the earthquake and it is a century since the fabrication of the "Korea-Japan Annexation Treaty", but the Japanese government has not clearly probed the truth about the incident, far from making apology and reparation for the atrocities.

He demanded the Japanese authorities honestly reflect on Japan's invasion of Korea and its colonial rule and probe the truth about all its past crimes including not only mass killings of Koreans after the earthquake but the forcible drafting of them and the sexual slavery for the Imperial Japanese Army and make apology and reparation for them.

A representative of the Tokyo Assemblymen's Liaison Council for the Promotion of Japan-Korea Friendship noted in a speech made at the meeting that there goes on a serious development in which malignant anti-DPRK propaganda is rampant in Japan.

He denounced the Japanese government for still blocking the entry of ship Mangyongbong-92, persisting in its sanctions against the DPRK, and resorting to discrimination and suppression of even Korean students in Japan.

Speeches were made there.

On the same day similar memorial services took place in various places of Chiba and Saitama prefectures.
