President Kim Il Sung saw to it that a Chinese classic "A Dream of Red Mansions" was adapted for a classical opera early in the 1960s in order to make a contribution to the ideological and emotional education of the people and provide them with a good knowledge of the world culture.

The opera of historical significance was recreated a few years ago, enjoying Kim Jong Il's energetic guidance on several occasions.

The recreation of the opera was completed successfully in less than a year with the precious experience gained in creating the five revolutionary operas employed in all spheres such as orchestration, dance, pangchang (off-stage song) and stage art.

The opera is performed mainly by young actors and actresses.

After seeing the performance, Chinese people said that the opera was a world-famous masterpiece which could be created only in Korea and that all of the art works created under the guidance of
Kim Jong Il were great.
