Nonsmoking Campaign Encouraged
Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- The nonsmoking campaign has been intensified in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

After a tobacco control law was enacted in the country some time ago, extensive activities have been conducted to put it into force.

The Korean Tobacco Association was organized in the country to take measures for properly carrying out the state policies concerning tobacco production, joint venture, collaboration, bonded processing, import, export and sale.

Smoking is prohibited in theatres, cinema houses, schools, hospitals, sidewalks, stops, traffic means and other public places and violators are exposed to legal sanctions.

Health institutions and mass media have introduced the harmful effect of tobacco on health, environmental protection and economic development in varied forms and methods.

Meanwhile, the Tobacco Substitutes Exhibition in Sosong District, Pyongyang, has been visited by many people.

The exhibition informs the visitors of the harmfulness and aftereffect of tobacco with videos and printed matters for propaganda. It also provides them with tobacco substitutes and tonics such as nutritive pills, chewing gum and tobacco filter.

On the World No Tobacco Day, May 31, Ri Yon Ok, chief of the exhibition, told KCNA that many people have quitted smoking with the help of the exhibition. We will produce many goods helping people quit smoking and expand the scientific and technical exchange with many countries encouraging nonsmoking, she added.

To mark the day diversified activities have been conducted in the country such as a symposium on measures to protect people from passive smoking. -0-
