Protection of Biodiversity Carried
Pyongyang, May 22 (KCNA) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has directed a great effort to protecting biodiversity.

In recent years biodiversity has been seriously affected by the worldwide climatic change.

The DPRK Government has adopted laws and decisions for protecting forests, environment, aquatic resources and useful animals and preserved the country's natural resources through the month of aquatic resources protection, the tree-planting day and other mass campaigns for protecting and enlarging biodiversity.

A nationwide survey of wild animals has been carried on successfully in the country, involving experts and animal fanciers.

They are now conducting a survey of white-bellied black woodpecker, a bird rare in the world, in Rinsan, Phyongsan, Sohung and other areas, along with a project for securing its habits.

Meanwhile, various activities have been conducted to promote public understanding of biodiversity and plant trees in all parts of the country in a far-sighted way.

On the occasion of the World Day of Biological Diversity (May 22), Kim Sun Il, secretary general of the Central Committee of the Nature Conservation Union of Korea, told KCNA the DPRK Government would contribute to the effort of the international society to ensure biodiversity on the globe by protecting the ecological environment and increasing the animal and plant resources.
