Pothong River Area Undergoes Great Change
Pyongyang, May 21 (KCNA) -- Sixty-four years has elapsed since a ceremony took place to start the project for improvement of the Pothong River in Pyongyang, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

On this occasion many people have visited the Pothong River Improvement Project Memorial Tower to learn about the grand nature-harnessing projects of the country kicked off by President
Kim Il Sung.

The President called for launching nature-remaking projects with the start of the river improvement work as part of the effort for the building of a prosperous sovereign state, democratic and independent, and broke the ground for the work on May 21, Juche 35 (1946).

Though vast, the project was finished in only 55 days thanks to his wise leadership and devoted labor of citizens.

Since then the river, which had easily overflowed its banks, claiming many casualties and enormous material damage, before the liberation of the country from the Japanese colonial rule, has undergone a great change.

Constructed on the river were Mansudae, Changgwang, Chollima and Rakwon streets with high-rise apartment buildings and such monumental edifices as the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum, the People's Palace of Culture and the Pyongyang Indoor Stadium.

The river is flanked with pleasure parks covering some 300 hectares in about 10km sections and with a large number of trees, flowers and shrubs.

The river has islets, large and small, and boating grounds, while the pleasure parks have fishponds, pools and public service facilities.
